The Italian manufacturer of sports cars was founded in 1914 in Bologna. The hallmark is the trident, it comes from the Neptune Fountain in Bolgna. Initially only racing cars were built. The Maserati Ghibli was the fastest street racing car of its time. Later there were street cars like the Maserati 3500 GT, Maserati Mistral, Maserati Quattroporte and Maserati Mexico emerged. Fiat acquired in 1993 the majority of shares of the company. Since 2005 Maserati will operate as an independent AG. There is a close collaboration between Maserati and Ferrari.
