In 1909 the Italian Ettore Bugatti founded an automobile factory in Molsheim in Alsace. The place belongs then to the German Empire, but after the second world war to France. With its vehicles Bugatti won numerous races. The company produced only a few models, like the racing car Type-35, the Royale and the sports car Type-55. During World War II the factory was destroyed. The company never recovered from it. What was remained of the company was taken over by Volkswagen AG, that brought the the traditional brand Bugatti EB118 back to life in the spring of 1998.
